Abstract:

This review summarizes the significance, progress, and ethical concerns of research on early human post-implantation development. Key events in early post-implantation development include implantation, amnion formation, gastrulation, organogenesis, extraembryonic mesoderm development, and primordial germ cell specification. However, the underlying developmental mechanisms remain poorly understood. Recent advancements in extended culture of human embryo, embryo model development, and single-cell and spatial transcriptomics have provided new insights and tools for understanding early human embryonic development. However, research involving human embryos and embryo models raises significant ethical issues, such as the rationality of the "14-day rule" and the moral status of embryo models. This review discusses these issues and proposes ethical guidelines to regulate research in this field, providing a reference for future studies.
