Abstract:

The Declaration of Helsinki, formulated by the World Medical Association, is the most important medical ethical principle regulating medical research activities. In October 2024, the association released a significantly revised tenth edition, with the most notable change being the replacement of the term “subject” in research activities with “participant”. This major revision is highly consistent with the new proactive healthcare model currently promoted in China, which  emphasizes that “everyone is the first responsible person for their own health”. Based on this, the author introduces and discusses the revised version from three aspects: “passive subject and active participant”, “autonomous individual and vulnerable individual”, and “individual rights and public interests”.
