Abstract:

Over the past three decades, the incidence of obesity and its related chronic diseases in China has been increasing rapidly, and the problem is now approaching epidemic proportions. Intermittent fasting (IF) can compulsorily reduce the calorie intake, attain a negative energy balance, and help to reduce body weight. Previous studies demonstrated that IF can also decrease blood glucose levels, improve insulin resistance and inhibit inflammatory response through switching the mode of energy metabolism, stimulating autophagy, adjusting the
circadian rhythms and reshaping gut microbiota. IF has a broad application prospect in the prevention and treatment of obesity-related chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, but its safety and efficacy in long-term body weight management remains to be studied systematically.
