Abstract: Abstract: Symphyla is a group of Myriapoda with very special morphological characters with its phylogenetic status always in debate. The taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on Symphyla are relatively deficient compared to other Arthropod groups up to now. There are only 204 species of symphylans described all over the world mainly from Europe, America and Australia, and only few records from Asia and Africa. The current classification system of Symphyla that includes 1 order, 2 families and 13 genera was widely adopted by the taxonomist; however, the relationships between the two families are still undetermined. Although the phylogenetic hypothesis of Progoneata (Symphyla + Pauropoda + Diplopoda) was supported by morphological as well as molecular data, different opinions always exist. The taxonomic and systematic study of Symphyla in China is fairly insufficient with only few scattered reports. The present paper summarized the recent progresses of systematic study of Symphyla from taxonomy and phylogeny aspects in order to drive the study of Symphyla of China in the future.
