Abstract: Abstract: miR-133 is a group of muscle-specific non-coding small RNAs which is specifically expressed or highly enriched in skeletal muscle and/or myocardium. It plays a crucial role in muscle-related diseases such as cardiac hypertrophy. Recent studies showed that the disturbance of miR-133 expression could be detected in different kinds of tumors, and was involved in proliferation, apoptosis, invasion and metastasis of various tumor cells by directly suppressing target gene such as EGFR, IGF-1R and MMPs. It is thought that the dysregulated expression of miR-133 is closely correlated with tumorigenesis and metastasis. Understanding the expression, regulation, and the role and mechanism of miR-133 will lay a strong foundation for clinical application. The relationship between miR-133 and its target genes and malignant tumors will be summarized in this article.
