Abstract: Abstract: Copper and iron are essential micronutrients involved in a variety of biological processes indispensable to life. These metals are closely connected in part by the requirement of multicopper ferroxidases for maintenance of normal iron homeostasis. Multicopper ferroxidases are critical for the efficient export of iron from cells throughout the body. Currently, three major multicopper ferroxidases have been identified: ceruloplasmin (Cp), hephaestin (Hp), and zyklopen (Zp). This review highlights recent advances in copper-iron interactions with a focus on the tissues and cell types important for regulating whole-body copper and iron metabolism, and discusses extensive future research opportunities.
Key words: copper; multicopper ferroxidase; iron metabolism and homeostasis
