Abstract: Abstract: Many factors involve in the intervertebral disc degeneration(IDD), the decrease of the disc extracellular matrix induced by the imbalance between anabolism and catabolism plays a significant role in this procedure. However, the reasons of these changes have not been fully elucidated. Cytokines mediated by the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathways play a significant role in the metabolic imbalance. Therefore, to study these signaling pathways provides a novel direction for understanding the causes and the treatment of IDD. This article summarizes MAPK and NF-κB signal transduction pathways and their role in IDD.
