Abstract: Abstract: China has experienced rapid nutrition transition in recent decades. Unhealthy diet and lifestyle associated obesogenic environment, along with genetic predisposition, are major drivers for the epidemic of metabolic diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes in Chinese. However, limited studies have systematically investigated major genetic and environmental risk factors in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases among Chinese. In last several years, we have conducted community-based epidemiologic studies. Multiple gene variants, environmental factors and biomarkers were found to be associated with metabolic diseases among Chinese population. Meanwhile, in our nutrition intervention trials, supplementing flaxseed, lignan or walnuts, as well as substituting white rice with brown rice were showed to improve management of metabolic syndrome or type 2
diabetes. All efforts are made to underline etiology and mechanism(s) linking to higher susceptibility of metabolic diseases in Chinese people and also provide new insights for disease prediction and prevention.
