Bruce A. Beutler,Jules A. Hoffmann

Abstract:
Abstract: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2011 was awarded to Bruce A. Beutler and Jules A. Hoffmann for their discoveries of the pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) in innate immunity, and Ralph M. Steinman for his discovery of the dendritic cells (DCs) and their roles in adaptive immunity. Host recognizes invading pathogens through PRRs in innate immunity, and pathogen-associated peptides processed by DCs are presented to the T cells to activate adaptive immunity. This review will summarize the history for the discoveries of PRRs and DCs, introduce the latest advances and discuss their applications in the treatment of related diseases.
Key words: pattern-recognition receptor; dendritic cell; signaling transduction; disease
